Multiple Software Glitches - Update
By Drew
I bought this unit and had it installed by an authorized retailer in March, 2012. I had problems and they replaced the unit. The new unit has the same problems. I've contacted Kenwood and they recommended sending it to a service center. I've had three main problems:1) The iPod integration is very unreliable with my (brand new) iPod Classic 160. I tried my friend's iPod Classic 80 and it did the same thing. The HU controls the iPod by pushing an app called Kenwood Direct Control to the iPod. This app runs fine for a while (anywhere from 1-30 minutes) and then the HU loses the connection and tries to restart the app. This goes on for anywhere from 10 seconds to 8 hours before the app starts working again. In the meantime, restarting the HU, restarting the iPod may or may not do anything. Usually I just manually control the iPod until the app randomly starts again. Oddly, I have played around a little bit with an iPhone and iPod Touch and neither of those seems to have a problem. This leads me to believe that my iPod problem is an issue with the Direct Control app and the older operating system in the iPod Classics. However, the Classic is the only iPod that has sufficient storage for my needs.2) The second problem is that the GPS component randomly deletes data like favorites and map settings (back to defaults). The first unit did this 3 times in the first several weeks. The second unit does this every few weeks. I don't bother saving favorites any more. I keep my portable $80 Garmin in the car to use when I need a reliable GPS. I wish my $999 Kenwood could fill that need but it does not3) The third annoying problem is the dimming function. The function is supposed to dim the HU in accordance with the sunrise and sunset mode of the GPS. However, it works correctly about 25% of the time.As I said, Kenwood recommended pulling the unit and sending it to a service center. I'm not sure what that would accomplish, since this unit does exactly what the last one did.The good news is that the audio is outstanding, the Bluetooth integration works great, and the HD radio, XM radio, Pandora and USB functions all work great.Update January, 2013. In Septmeber last year the Kenwood started displaying the "splash screen of death." Check the message boards and you will read a lot about this problem. It renders the unit irreparable by the dealer and they have to send it back. My dealer did not have a new one in stock and I was DONE with this thig anyway so my dealer replaced it with an Alpine INE-S920HD and I never looked back. The Alpine has everything the Kenwood had except a traffic feed for the Navigation but it works and I'm happy.

Very fast processor
By Analogkid
This unit is much faster than previous models. It has a great ipod user interface. The navigation works like a charm too. I am real impressed with this unit and cannot find any flaws. Good job Kenwood! I just got this unit last week though so I am still playing with all the features. It does let you stream music though bluetooth from your phone. I am not a fan of that but that seems to be what most people ask me about. It also has a much clearer display, and it has better color.

All of my problems are gone with the latest firmware
By Mike L
I bought this head unit as a way to justify keeping my car for a few more years instead of upgrading.Things I NEEDED in my car:Bluetooth hands free that I couldn't lose or have a dead battery, and would be good enough to talk to customer's while driving without them getting pissed at me.Ability to retain steering-wheel audio controlsThings I WANTED:Pandora via bluetooth (from Droid 2 Global and Galaxy SIII)Cell phone charging directly from headunit USBNavigation that doesn't slide off the dash when I turn quicklyThis does all of that for me (needed to buy an additional unit to use steering wheel controls, but was effortless).NEGATIVES:HD Radio reception in my area is shotty, or this radio sucks at receiving it. No one else I know has one, so I don't have a reference point.Pandora/AHA via bluetooth is a random crapshoot every time you choose the source. 40% of the time it works every time. Phone reboot fixes it in the 10% of cases where it won't connect if you just leave it.Firmware took a long time to get where it is, but seems stable at this point - no more crashes or errors or freezing.Lack of ability to set audio settings on front/rear speakers seperately or do custom crossovers. I downloaded the manual before I purchased the unit and it looked like I'd be fine - but those instructions were apparantly for the 7190 ( a NON-Excelon...) which kind of sucks, but won't matter to most people.**MicroSD slot has a hole the size of a MicroSD card directly on top of/next to it. I don't know where this hole goes, but there is an 8gb microsdhc card somewere back there that I lost**GPS takes a long time to get a fix - but I have the antenna under the dash. Will be attempting to move it in the summer somewhere better for hopefully better signal.POSITIVES:Garmin GPS. Either this matters to you, or you haven't used a garmin and then tried to use something else.Garmin map updates on MicroSD. Officially you pay for these once a year. Unofficially the regular quarterly updates work fine on this device.Bluetooth works greatPandora over Bluetooth is great
