5Great bike rack!
By L. Shulthise
I previously owned a Saris Thelma II rack and thought it was great. It had a couple problems like the 2.35 tires on my mountain bike didn't fit well and the tire holder warped on one side but it was still much better than a trunk rack.My Saris was damaged in an accident and I did some homework before I chose a rack replacement. I wanted something I could leave the bike on while if I stopped to eat dinner after a ride without worrying about someone stealing it. The Thule 990XT fit the bill better than anything else I could find. Also, all of the Thule racks that I'd seen were very high quality so I trusted the name. This rack secures the bike by the frame and not the wheel. The racks that secure the bike by the wheel are not as secure because, even if the wheel is locked down, you just remove the front wheel and its easy to take the bike. Although this rack can be hacked by a determined thief, they will need some tools on had to do so. I believe this rack would be harder to hack than a standard bike cable. I would recommend swaging the bolt ends so a thief can't just take the nuts off the bolts to get the bike. With the bolts secured, the weak point becomes the bike hooks. I assume they can be cut with bolt cutters but I'm not sure. This rack moves around a LOT less than the Saris did. It also comes with locks for the two bike hooks as well as a lock to secure the rack to the hitch. This is nice since you only need one key for everything and you don't have to buy an additional lock for the hitch and a cable lock for the bike like I did with the Thelma II.I love the latching system. With the Saris I had to pull a pin out, rotate the rack down then find the hole, line up the parts, and reinstall the latching pin. With the Thule 990XT you just pull one lever to rotate the rack down and pull another lever to rotate the bike hooks up. It takes just a few seconds and could not be much easier. The 4 tire holders slide back and forth so this rack will pretty much accommodate any size or shape bikes including odd shaped frames. It also covers the rear license plate of the car less than the Saris Thelma II.One note is that this rack is pretty heavy. I'd guess its around 40 lbs. Its all tubular steel construction and not aluminum. I think that makes it sturdier and more secure but it is heavy. Not a big deal in my opinion. This is the best rack I've seen so far and I've seen a bunch new bike racks this summer. I had high expectations of this rack but after actually using it I have to say it has exceeded my expectations. The quality construction and the super fast and secure latching system are the best features about the rack in my opinion.

4Good product but has flaws
By Matt Lewis Reese
Before this rack I owned the type where the top tube of the bike sat on the rack, and it was not able to fold in anyway when in use so it made my car huge. This rack is much better since it folds up and only adds at most a foot to the back of the car when not in use. During the spring and summer months I also leave it on my car 24/7.Pro's- Folds up and only adds about a foot of extra space to your car- sturdy bike mounting method, bikes do not move around once attached to the rack.- Bikes lock into rack, and the rack locks into your car making your bikes safe if you have to run into a store.- works in a 1.25 or 2 in hitchCon's- Not as weather resistant as I would like. I leave this on my car 24/7 during the spring and summer months. That is the whole reason why I bought this type of rack. All the black parts are fine, but some of the bolts which attach various parts are starting to rust as well as some of the moving parts and it is only about 8-9 months old. WD-40 may solve some of the moving part issues.-the rack does not attach as strongly as I would like to my 2in hitch. Since it uses a 1.25 to 2 in adapter the rack itself does shake. It is not going to fall off as it is securely bolted to my hitch, but if the adapter was a more secure connection.Overall this is a good rack at a good price. Perhaps some of the more high end racks are better in the weather, I would not know, but so far the parts that are rusting can be easily replaced. Despite this issue I would still recommend this rack.UpdateSo I have had this for close to 3 seasons and I want to comment on the wear. One of the locks stopped working and had to be removed but the rack still works, one of the locations just does not lock anymore. However, the 2nd bike spot still locks so its fine when I am biking by myself and need to make a quick stop somewhere. As for the rusty parts they still work about the same as they did after 8-9 months and I do put WD40 on them from time to time. The WD40 only works for about two weeks however. Also I now use the rack in a new car on a 1.25 in hitch and I can say it secures much betterAgain I would still recomend this rack

2good but seriously flawed
By paul857
I bought this a little over a year ago to replace a Swagman XC Cross-Country. The unit is much heavier than the Swagman but much more sturdy- an understandable trade-off. I initially found it awkward to use and difficult to load the bikes. The biggest problem was that the release lever for the center post was so stiff it could not be released with one hand thus making it very difficult to fold down to remove the inner bike. Over time it loosened up and I became accustomed to using the rack and grew to like it. The reason for the 2 stars is that the paint on both our bikes have been damaged by the rack. The rubber hook covers that are supposed to protect the tube dried and cracked allowing the metal hooks to rub against the bike tube. We have a lot of money invested in our bikes and find it hard to believe that Thule can't come up with a hook cover that lasts more than a year. I would warn anyone that owns this or a similar Thule rack to check the condition of the hook covers. unfortunately it seems Thule does not sell these covers as replacement parts- will try to contact them and update.
