Great unit, but not for the first time installer.
By Scuba Steve
I installed this unit in my 2006 Chevy Express and the install turned out great. I have installed hundreds of car stereo / navigation / mobile entertainment systems, and this one really gave me a tough time. If you have never installed a unit like this, or are at all hesitant, DO NOT INSTALL IT YOURSELF. IT DOESN'T COME WITH AN INSTALLATION MANUAL. There is no metal sleeve for you to install in your dash and slide the stereo into, most double din radios don't use this method. I had to custom fabricate mounting brackets and only used the face trim piece (also had to be trimmed so the unit would fit inside) out of the installation kit. This unit also has a lot of connections. You get the basic 4 speaker + power, 2 sets of pre-outs (front and rear), 1 mono sub out. There is also the standard antenna input, gps antenna input and ipod cable connection. It has an aux input (right, left, and video), back-up camera input, and 2 video out connectors. The unit also has a power antenna, amplifier power, back-up light sensor, and parking break connection. There are 3 other wires that I haven't been able to find any documentation on. These are labeled key 1, key 2, and key ground. I believe these are used for steering wheel controls, or wired remotes possibly for the 2 video outputs. All this wire, and the fact this is a full double din unit, takes up a lot of space in the dash. If you are feeling up to it, give the installation a try, just safe the beer for after the install. Powered up, the unit responds well, is easy to operate, and functions better than I had expected. Still trying to find an update for the gps. Went to the gps website to find update, but the unit isn't on the supported devices list. Guess I will have to call tech support tomorrow. The bluetooth mobile phone interface is excellent and makes operating your phone while driving easy and "safe". The microphone it located in the face of the unit, so you at least don't have to install that. The front panel also has a mini usb port and comes with an adapter cable to allow you to use a standard usb thumb drive.

Gps map updates
By dt
I installed this unit into a 2007 Ford Explorer. It took about seven hours including the back up camera also made by Pyle. Neither one had insallation instructions. The unit is telling me my gps maps are out of date and to go to naviextras.com for updates.I was also told by PYLE support to contact naviextras. Don't bother, naviextras does NOT support this unit. I have contacted PYLE support again and am now told that the manufacture does the gps map udates. I was told to call them back in a month about a updated sim card. So far poor service and inacurate information.Just received this email response from Naviextras: Dear Don Till,we would like to inform you that the sent license is not valid. It seems that you became victim of software piracy as this license is used by a lot of cracked software. It is illicit and we cannot provide any support for it.Important: it is NOT possible to legalise a cracked license as it is generated individually for each device. You CANNOT replace the cracked PNA software version. We do not sell PNA versions as PNAs are sold with embedded software. Please contact the distributor and/or manufacturer of the device for further information. For the PDA version of our software (which is sold separately), please find the list of our distributors at the following page: http://igomyway.com/igo-navigation-partnersWe advise you to buy only from our genuine distributors.Best regards,Naviextras® Support

Useful Information Before Buying Including Map Updates!
By T. Dinnall
I have been using this unit for about two weeks now; I cannot attest to its longevity. However, I can provide information as far as its versatility, value, and for lack of another "v" word, functionality.Understand that I am a skeptic in the strictest sense and I am having a hard time believing that all of the reviews on this product have been written by real consumers. Were they created by real people? Perhaps, but I would argue not by ones who have actually purchased and use the product.I talked to the customer disservice representatives from Pyle and they basically wanted to exploit peoples' money via GPS map updates. ($49.99 whenever they figure out how to update the maps themselves!!) I figured out a way to get map updates and even life traffic reports. It'll be discussed below.GPS:I have used this product for multiple long distance trips; I am a private contractor so commute very often for business related reasons. The GPS that I had was insufficient so the main attraction for this unit was that I wanted to have access to a larger screen and better functionality with my navigation device. This is hands down the best GPS that I've ever used. I know how to update the maps and may be willing to share my knowledge for a nominal fee; either that or for free - contact me for details: tappahd@gmail.comYou can read other reviews to see what the GPS offers because I won't duplicate that information here. I will instead list things that I saw to be very helpful.1) The history of where to travel from your current location seems to be reflected on your most popular destinations from your current location rather than a list of places you've recently been. So for example, let's say you travel out of town on vacation and you're staying in a hotel for 5 nights. You're unfamiliar with the area so you need to navigate to the best places to eat. Each time you leave to restaurants and head back to the hotel, your history will reflect the address of the hotel at the top of the list so you don't have to search for it. Now, when you're finally back home and you are navigating to work because you have a long commute, (you know the way, but you navigate for traffic information) your work address will appear in the top of the history rather than the hotel that you traveled to so frequently in the immediate past. Seemingly location-specific intuitive historical memory programmed into the GPS...With my maps, the Traffic Message Channel via FM Radio and live traffic events (including traffic congestion (realtime)) actually work.iPod:I used to run into problems where the pressing of buttons on the GPS would interrupt the current volume of the media playing and it would either become louder or softer, depending on how loud the original media volume was, to match the volume programmed in the GPS settings. This was puzzling because I had all of the volumes MUTED in the GPS settings and all alerts and warnings set on "Visual" rather than "Audible" or "Visual and Audible." - I thought it was a hardware problem - silly me, it was strictly software. The GPS update that I use now, which is still iGo Primo 2.0 International (which comes installed on this device, but is modified to enable poorly scripted codes) solves the problem of audibly dissonant interruptions when using the GPS.Unfortunately, there is still no "Search" function that I have discovered for the iPod. Therefore, your iPod controls will be limited to the functions available on the unit which include playlists, all songs, genre, artist, album and et cetera; however, when you search all songs, you will start alphabetically each time without the ability to "scroll by letter" to choose the song you want to listen to. It makes pinpointing random songs difficult. If you're like me, then you find that "pinpointing" a "random" song is impossible because it is no longer random once you have chosen to look for a specific song... but I digress.Sometimes the unit doesn't recognize the ipod at first - you can still play the songs on the ipod through the car speakers, but you will use the ipod for control rather than the head unit. To fix this, turning on the radio then re-selecting the ipod icon will work. Other times, disconnecting then reconnecting the ipod will work. You may just have to restart the unit occasionally - either way, it's not too big of an inconvenience.I have two 12" kicker cvr's in my 2011 nissan rogue - a pic can be provided if you really want to see how awesome my car looks with the custom wheels and dark tint. But, a potential problem for those who have been accustomed to Low and High Pass Filters to protect the integrity of their speakers, both factory and after-market, is that this unit does not provide one. What I have done to counter-act this, because my amp was previously set to filter the frequencies I didn't want before I had this unit installed, was adjust the frequencies offered on the "User" equalizer until it was pleasing to the ears, turn down the "bass" feature on the equalizer, then increase the Gain on the amp until the subs were handling almost all of the bass (without distortion of course) and the car speakers were still distortion-free all the way up to my own personal `max volume.'DVD player:Per my request, I had the DVD player grounded during installation. If it wasn't, the DVD player would only function when the parking break was in place. This is a safety feature so that you're not watching movies while you drive. For me, the system thinks that the parking break is always in place, although it is not, and I can watch the movies at any time. I had a passenger watching Ip Man, which I think is an awesome movie, the clarity, volume, and screen brightness were stunning for a cheap little head unit like this one. I haven't used it since, but I am excited to finally not have to travel for business and have someone else bring a movie along so they can enjoy it - my subwoofers make action movies very enjoyable to watch.Radio:Loaded with features, I guess? I was confused by a lot of the options, but it is an International unit; I don't need a lot of what it has to offer, I just want the FM radio so it can communicate with the GPS' TMC.For the price, I paid 260 bux for this unit. 160 for install... $420 for a DVD playing, navigating, 7inch double din head unit... where the dealer was still trying to sell me a $1200 comparable Pioneer AVIC while prepping my car for install, although he was warning me not trying to pressure me, this unit is a steal!I laughed when I saw some of the way things were worded in the "manual" which is useless unless you need scrap paper to write a number down on from one of those wannabe-Enron electrical companies trying to get you to pay them for your energy so you know which area codes to block. I also chuckled at some of the discouraging and condescending comments made by the installers about the unit. (I was prepared to buy an Pioneer AVIC for 1,200'ish, but I wasn't sure how I would like the touch screen interface and the location of my GPS rather than on my windshield - btw, I LOVE IT!) This unit was originally a "this can't be real life; I gotta try this piece of crap just to see what people can get away with selling to others" idea, but it turned out to be a gold mine! Again, with this unit it is very customizable - with the GPS I have massive overhauls that increase the functionality such as when you detour from your route, it doesn't tell you to get back on the route and continue to your destination, it asks for a reason you detoured and offers a chance to create impromptu waypoints like gas stations, restaurants, rest stops and et cetera, all the while it doesn't block you from seeing your way back to your original route because it doesn't assume that you're deviating on purpose... just one example of many, folks. So again if you want this GPS upgrade contact me at tappahd@gmail.com - we'll talk.Overall score(standard gps): 8/10 Overall Score GPS upgrade: 9/10Stock GPS: 6.5/10Upgraded Maps w/ live traffic events: 10/10DVD Player: 10/10iPod Interface: 5.8/10Radio: 10/10
