By DJIA305
Before I begin, I must tell you that I purchased this model off Crutchfield online where they have the $149.99 price, free shipping, and free installation kit/instructions. Also, I found an expired $10 off online coupon that surprisingly worked, so I paid only $139.99 for this! Obviously, this (very) low price will affect the way I review this unit.I installed this unit in my '12 Dodge Challenger SXT to replace the factory head unit. I had already installed an MTX amp and 2 12" Alpine Type-R subs (this pounds really loud). Installation was a breeze (seriously, crimp same-colored wires together) and also installed the Microbypass parking brake bypass so that *my passenger*, ahem, can watch videos on our road trips. FYI, for the bypass to work, you simply crimp its blue wire to THE RADIO'S blue/white remote turn-on cable (not the one coming from the car), the green parking brake cable from THE RADIO (not from the car), and the black ground cable to the car's black ground cable. Once all cables have been crimped up, you're ready to go....or at least I thought I was. I went to push the unit into the opening to seal everything up, and guess what? IT DOESN'T FIT! So, Crutchfield was right: it will fit with modification. Instead of giving up, I grabbed a hacksaw and sawed off parts of this big plastic divider (why it's there, heaven only knows) and after vacuuming the mess and tucking all cables and PAC adapter (oh, I forgot, my car needed this, and Crutchfield will sell it to you for about 40% off with the purchase of the radio), and FINALLY I was ready to go (head's up, Challenger owners). After ensuring that the unit did in fact work, I screwed everything back together. Setup was straightforward, at its basic, this AppRadio is pretty much almost like any other modern touchscreen radio. The radio feature is very cool in the sense that it allows you to dial in the radio station of your choice, and almost instantaneously the new station comes on. But no one buys this just for FM radio ;)In order for you to access the Apps off your iPhone (I use the 4S, for what it's worth) through the bypass, this is what I do: First, put the car on I guess the idle or "just the electronics on" mode, in other words before ignition mode, which is 2 notches before actually turning on the car. Let the radio do its thing, hit ok or whatever it says until it finally lands on the main screen. Now plug in your iPhone, and you'll see it gives you the driving while screen is on warning screen, but the OK button is darkened out. In other words, it will not allow you to access these unless if you actually tapped the e-brake a few times (thus eliminating the need for the bypass and taking out all the fun). Your iPhone will ask you to ALLOW the AppRadio app to run, so hit ALLOW. Again, the warning may pop-up, *NOW* is when you turn your car on. You will get the "Good Morning, XXXXXX's iPhone" or whatever, and now you may access your apps. This is how you know the bypass works. From there, to access your music videos, movies, etc., simply hit the Home button on your iPhone, go into videos, and voila! The videos will play on the AppRadio, and you can drive off, so that your passenger can enjoy them *ahem*.Anyway, yes, sometimes the AppRadio will act quirky, for example, for a day or two, the volume would mute itself, particularly when the volume was turned up past 27 or so. However, it hasn't done this again in the past 2 days. Weird. I was thinking it was possibly due to me connecting all 3 pairs of the wires that power the speakers (apparently, one pair can power a small sub, I connected those to each other), so if the problem continues I will pull the radio out and clip them. In which case, I will update my review. Also, sometimes there's lag when switching from app to app. I guess since I'm so used to the speed of the iPhone, I'm spoiled, but really, to me it hasn't been a deal-breaker. Lastly, the first time I used the Drive-X (or whatever it's called) Nav app, it took a few minutes to adjust itself, but man, once it did... I was amazed. It is much better than the factory nav system in my wife's 2011 Nissan Rogue. I promptly upgraded the app to the sale price of $9.99 for voice nav for the year, and paid $.99 for the Cougar voice (absolutely hilarious yet sexy :p).To sum it up, *FOR THE PRICE I PAID*, this is a steal of a deal. Yes it is quirky, and as others have mentioned, it may seem like a first gen product, but it really isn't all that bad. It looks so smooth and clean, videos look amazing, and it sounds just fine (I'm using factory speakers but am waiting to install my Polk Audio speakers). Add a sub or two, and most people will be fine with just the factory speakers. FM radio sound quality could be better, but again, for this price no one is allowed to complain. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a 5-star rating is lack of Sirius XM radio support. I mean, even my basic factory radio had this, and it came free for a year. However, it does support Pandora, and it does a mighty fine job with it.Buy this unit if you want to 21st century technology on a budget, and assuming you will be keeping your iPhone 4/4S for quite some time (it won't support iPhone 5). Also, for what it's worth, I wouldn't pay anywhere close to retail for it. Get them at this price before they're gone!Lastly, feel free to ask any questions on the Comments/Replies section, and I'll gladly answer them!

My radio is very hard to connect to my iPhone4s. I have to cut the car on then off to connect. It keeps freezing up. Out of the two weeks I have had the radio I have had to reset it more than ten times. Very disappointed in this product.

By Nitrousbird
The SPH-DA02 is then 2nd generation of the AppRadio. One would assume it would be an improved version over the SPH-DA01 but my research has found it is basically the same thing (though the firmware is different). This unit has been recently discontinued from Pioneer. The SPH-DA100, the AppRadio 2, is the current unit but a far more expensive device at well over double the price.I am giving this unit a 3 star rating due to the price. Had I paid anywhere near MSRP this would be a 1-2 star review. Review is based on use with a non-jailbroken 4S on 6.1.1 (unit is installed in my company vehicle using my company 4S...my personal phone is a jailbroken 5 which isn't compatible).Cons (known just from the listed specs and basic research):- Only compatible with the iPhone 4/4S. Is not and will not be compatible with the iPhone 5. It may/may not work with the 3GS...I haven't tried it with my old 3GS yet.- Only one set of pre-outs and only 2V at that. This is not a unit for someone building a nice system.- Infrequent firmware updates = lack of support from Pioneer for correcting known issues- Many apps are pricey for what they are.- The wiring and hookups on the back of the unit seem like a real after thought. This has been improved on the AppRadio2.- Could really use more apps that aren't more of the same.Cons (only known from in-depth research and now owning the unit):- Any time I activate Siri and the Bluetooth is linked, the unit tries to dial my phone number.- Boot time is painfully long at around 30 seconds. AppRadio 2 doesn't have this issue.- Parking brake is a nightmare with this thing. You HAVE to bypass it otherwise this unit is about worthless. You can either do it by putting in a toggle switch or installing/programming a PAC TR7 with a relay. I went the PAC route, but you have to time it out to 40 seconds (as the unit needs to fully boot up) or otherwise it won't function. Even then, it works only 90% of the time. You CAN NOT bypass the parking brake by simply grounding it.- Unit locks up from time to time.- Awful at multi-tasking. For instance, there is no Sirius app compatibility. To use Sirius, I have to switch from the AppRadio software to the Sirius App, causing the unit to go back to the main menu. It can't just simply run the AppRadio app on the unit and the Sirius App displayed on my phone.- Built-in iPod App on the unit is garbage. The free App you can download (Car Media Player) is far better. But that has to be run from the Apps vs. run from the home screen- Free web browser is total garbage and worthless.- Maps program doesn't work anything even close to what is shown on Pioneer's demo video. In the demo video, you can enter addresses and use it for navigation. In reality, you can only see the map and change your view from street to satellite to a hybrid view. There is no way to use it for navigation.- Screen clarity is only okay. I have an older Eclipse Navigation unit in my wife's car and even though it is a several year old model at a similar price point the clarity is as good or better.Pros:- Pandora works very well. Though you still get the skip limitation you do not get commercials using the Pandora app- In the end, you get a full touch screen double-din head unit for a very affordable price- Phonebook works well.- Bluetooth phone performance is on-par with most aftermarket head units. No Bluetooth paring issues.- Sound quality from the built in amp is far superior to the factory head unit (unit installed in a base '06 F-150). It is a HUGE difference.- EQ is decent and the usual Pioneer affair, which is a good thing...especially at this price point. If this was in my personal vehicle, I would be unhappy with it. For my work vehicle, where my needs are more limited and I wasn't willing to invest a fortune into it, the unit is passable. I know the AppRadio2 improves on some of my complaints and is supposed to be lightning compatible soon, I don't think it is worthwhile for the price point. If interested in this kind of radio without a major budget restriction, I would suggest holding out for the AppRadio3 and see if they can finally get it 90% right with that unit.
