This thing is the best. I love that you can mount a tandem or a single bike depending on the day. The other best part is that it's super easy to load a Tandem, it has this pivoting system built in so that you only have to lift 1/2 the bike at once before fully mounting it. So, I can load my tandem bike all by myself. RockyMounts Tandem R4 is the definitely a quality and easy rack to use and comes at a good price. I've been very happy with this rack and would definitely recommend it.

This could be an excellent rack, but for two flaws, one of which is a show-stopper.The pivoting tube that holds the bike fork is inexplicably welded on at an angle, perhaps to look "cool" or aerodynamic or something. (To avoid a patent infringement lawsuit has also been suggested.) The problem is that when you turn the pivoting tube 90 degrees to attach the fork of your heavy, awkward tandem bike, (while the rear wheel of the bike is still on the ground,) the axle that holds the fork is now slanted down significantly relative to the ground, perhaps at 20 degrees from horizontal. To align the bike fork with the now-downward-slanted axle is a serious pain in the backside; you have to lean the whole bike over sideways about 20 degrees. Meanwhile, the QR skewer likes to slide down inside the slanted axle tube so you really need a second person to help hold it in place, and to help manhandle the bike so the fork lands on the sloping axle. This rather defeats the "one-person loading" claim of the rack! (Trying to load the bike at a less-than-90 degree angle from the car, i.e. more parallel to the car, doesn't work either; the captain's chainring and pedals make contact with the side of the car.)This is a really lousy design shortcoming. It takes what could have been a stellar bike rack and turns it into one of those products that makes you grind your teeth in frustration every time you use it, wishing you'd bought something else. Trying to politely bring this to the attention of the RockyMounts factory was fruitless; clearly, they don't want feedback from people who are actually using this product.The only fix is to cut the pivoting tube assembly completely off of the long horizontal tube, (i.e. grind through the welds,) re-cut the horizontal tube at 90 degrees, shape the cut end so it fits the profile of the pivoting tube assembly, and have it re-welded. Naturally, the resulting burnt paint looks terrible, but at least the design modification works and you can finally load a tandem by yourself.The other design flaw is that the metal axle tube (through which the QR skewer runs) does not rotate. This may not seem like a problem until you attach your bike per instructions, tighten the QR skewer (which you have to do, otherwise your bike's fork will crash onto your car roof,) lift the rear wheel up and set it into the tray. Then you'll realize that the face of the non-pivoting axle tube has just sheared all of the paint off the inside of your fork blades. Not cool, and I hate to think what this would do to a carbon fiber fork.I really wanted to love this rack. The sliding tray is well conceived, the rack is sturdy and solid and it isn't fazed by the Pacific Northwest's constant rainfall. Sadly, the two design problems above render it far, far less functional then competing offerings from Yakima, ATOC and Draftmaster.

We bought this rack because it was just a sleeker design and is more functional than many tandem racks. I like that you can it it to any size bike. In a rain storm I was able to move it from being a tandem rack to being a single bike rack QUICKLY!!! I love how the mounting piece pivots. I am short and it always took my husband and I to get the tandem on the top of the car. Not anymore! It is super easy to swing the bike on to the top of the Subaru. Even without a cool tandem in the rack, it looks really nice on the car and it is a sleek design. Love my Rocky Mounts!!!! This company knows what they are doing!
